Accommodations in Belize range from budget-friendly to luxurious, depending on what type of experience you’d like to have. If you’re looking for the most affordable option, consider staying at a hostel. The average cost for one person is USD $35-50 per night.

If you’re looking for something a bit less budget-focused, many resorts and lodges in Belize offer amazing amenities and services. Prices range from USD $75-200 per night, depending on the type of accommodation and location.  For totally luxurious accommodations, prices usually start at $400 US and go up to over $1,000 US per night.

Traveling by public bus in Belize is a great way to explore the culture for an extremely affordable price. Buses travel between cities for only $5 to $10 USD, making them the most common form of transportation. The bus journeys offer an authentic experience, allowing you to interact with locals and take note of your surroundings as you move from place to place. If you’d like a more comfortable and direct form of transportation, taxis are also an option. Taxi rides vary in cost, but are reasonable.  However, we don’t recommend taxis for long distance transportation.  Instead, we recommend shuttles or private ground transportation, which is usually less expensive than taxis for long trips (for example between the airport and San Ignacio).

Food in Belize is where you can save a lot of money, if you seek out and find the ‘local’ eateries. Two adults can eat a meal for less than $10 US total (without alcoholic beverages) and be full!  There are more expensive places to eat, but the most expensive will be in the higher-end resorts.

Is a Vacation in Belize More Affordable Than other Central American Countries?

Map of Central America

A vacation in Belize is affordable, but is a bit more costly than its neighbors, Mexico & Guatemala, and also slightly more expensive than Costa Rica. With an average daily cost of USD $85 per person in Belize and only USD $25 & USD $35 on average in Mexico & Guatemala (respectfully), it’s clear that Belize is the pricier option. However, with its gorgeous beaches, jungle areas and unique culture, Belize is an attractive choice for those looking to experience something a bit different.

Belize is also slightly more expensive than Costa Rica overall. The average cost for a day in Costa Rica is about USD$70. So again, compared to Belize it is a bit less expensive.

But remember, the official language of Belize is English! With signs in English, the use of the customary U.S. units of measurements (mpg, inches, Fahrenheit, etc.…) there is much less stress of getting around and immersing yourself in the country.

Conclusion

There is no doubt that a vacation in Belize is affordable, but it isn’t the cheapest. Though the costs may be higher than other Central American countries, Belize is definitely worth the additional investment. Be sure to plan ahead and budget accordingly, so you can make the most of your vacation in Belize while staying within your means! With a bit of preparation and research, your dream vacation in Belize can become a reality on any budget.
